About Oxford

Oxford has rightly been described as the city of learning and dreaming spires, and as one of the jewels in the crown of European civilisation. The University is one of the oldest in Europe and it has been the student home of famous writers, poets, philosophers, scientists and politicians - since 1945 all, with the exception of two, Prime Ministers have come from Oxford University.

Oxford is an exciting city, a thriving social and cultural centre with fine shops, cinemas, museums, theatres, pubs and discos. The old and the new meet and somehow merge happily to make Oxford the perfect centre for studying. Oxford is young at heart and it is a place where young people dream of tomorrow and work and play. With so many young people living here, studying together, sharing their leisure and special interests, Oxford is a place for lively young minds - a broadening, invigorating experience, which in the years ahead is never forgotten.

There are a large number of colleges in Oxford, here is some information about some which you can visit:

  • The oldest college in Oxford is probably Merton College, dating from 1264.
  • Christ Church was projected by Cardinal Wolsey in 1525, and finally established almost 20 years later by King Henry VIII in 1546. The College Chapel is also used as Oxford Cathedral.
  • Magdalen College dates from around 1458. The tower at the North end of Magdalen bridge was completed in 1509.
  • New College, despite it's name, is one of the oldest colleges. It was founded in 1379 by William of Wykeham, the Bishop of Winchester.
  • Pembroke College was founded in 1624 by James I and named after William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke.
  • All Souls' College was founded in 1348 by Henry VI and Archbishop Chichele.

Oxford has also been used in a large number of films and television shows. The most well known is probably Inspector Morse. Another film where Oxford plays a large part (and you see some of the more distinctive buildings) is The Saint. If you wish to find out about more films then by all means search the web, Oxford has been a location favorite for decades.
